Königsbrücker Straße: Latest information on how to get to HELLERAU

Renovation work on Königsbrücker Straße will begin in September 2026. This will also affect the route to HELLERAU. First, the good news: HELLERAU will remain accessible at all times. However, if you are travelling from the city centre, you should allow a little extra time and check the latest timetable information.

We will also keep you informed on this page throughout the construction period about the latest changes to traffic management, diversions and adjustments to local public transport services.

What is being reconstructed?

Königsbrücker Straße is one of the most important links between Dresden’s Neustadt district and the north of the city. It stretches for around five kilometres from Albertplatz to Klotzsche. The long-planned upgrade will begin in September 2026, initially on the southern section between Albertplatz and Stauffenbergallee.

Over a stretch of around 1.5 kilometres, the road, tram tracks and stops will be completely renewed and the traffic flow reorganised. The upgrade will take place in several construction phases and will span several years.

What does this mean for your journey to HELLERAU?

Particularly in Dresden’s Neustadt district, there may be changes to traffic routes and longer journey times whilst the works are underway. Tram services are also affected by the construction work.

Getting there by tram

On September 28, 2026, work will begin on the first construction phase of Königsbrücker Straße between Albertplatz and Bischofsweg. Through June 2027 (as currently planned), tram tracks, roadways, sidewalks, and underground utility lines will be replaced there, among other things.

For tram lines 7 and 8, this means a detour in both directions starting Monday, September 28, 2026, at 22:00: Between the Albertplatz and Bischofsweg stops, the lines will run via Bahnhof Neustadt, Großenhainer Platz, and the Bischofsplatz S-Bahn station.

The Louisenstraße stop will not be served during this time. Instead, the stops Bahnhof Neustadt, Bahnhof Neustadt Hansastraße, Lößnitzstraße, Großenhainer Platz, Friedensstraße, and the Bischofsplatz S-Bahn station will be served additionally. The Bischofsweg stop in the direction of Weixdorf/Hellerau will be served as an alternative on Bischofsweg at the stop for Line 13 heading toward Prohlis.

For your trip to HELLERAU, this means: HELLERAU remains accessible by tram. Line 8 continues to run toward Hellerau but will be rerouted around the construction site. Please allow a little extra time for your trip and check the DVB’s current schedule information before traveling.

Travelling by car

There will also be restrictions on car traffic during the construction work. Outside of the nightly full closures, Königsbrücker Straße will generally remain open to traffic. Whenever possible, at least one lane will be available in both directions. However, lanes may be shifted or narrowed due to the construction sites. Parking spaces within the respective construction sites will be temporarily unavailable.

Between Albertplatz and Bischofsweg, traffic will be routed past the construction sites in sections. Depending on the progress of construction, detours via Bischofsweg, Schönbrunnstraße, and Eschenstraße are also planned. The current traffic routing will be posted on-site and may change as construction progresses.

Additional restrictions will be in effect from September 28 to 30, 2026: On these nights, from 22:00 to 05:00, the overhead power lines between Bischofsweg and Albertplatz will be dismantled. As a result, Königsbrücker Straße will be completely closed in this area.

If you are traveling to HELLERAU by car, we therefore recommend allowing a little extra time—especially during construction phases and when events are taking place – and paying attention to the current traffic routing.
